Sunday 16th February saw all the teams descend onto Edinburgh College to compete in the Final District League Round for Men & Women.
Going into the last round of fixtures, Bears and Jets Masters were tied on points and Edinburgh Jets Women had a healthy lead over Edinburgh University.
The morning started brightly with Jets Masters securing their Semi Final slot with a 2-0 win over Edinburgh Jets and Linlithgow Hornets getting off to a fantastic start with some crucial wins to secure them 3rd place in the seedings. Bears overcame Jets Masters in a quality contest to take the Number 1 seed position going into the Classification tournament.
The playoff matches were set with Linlithgow Hornets facing off against Edinburgh Jets and NUVOC taking on City of Edinburgh.
In the Women’s competition, both City of Edinburgh teams had made a vast improvement since the last round competing with Edinburgh Jets and Edinburgh University throughout their matches but the experienced sides held their nerve to finish out the matches 2-0. This set up a winner takes all between Edinburgh Jets and Edinburgh University. The level and experience shown by Jets was consistent and this allowed them to maintain the pressure on the Uni side and take the match with an unbeaten run throughout the league.
Hornets secured their Semi Final berth with a strong 2-0 win over Edinburgh Jets while NUVOC found another gear to win through to the Semi Finals after defeating City of Edinburgh in a close match.
Bears took on NUVOC in the first Semi Final and proved too strong for the NUVOC side to book their place in the final while Hornets pushed Jets Masters all the way in a pulsating contest but it was the masters side that prevailed.
Hornets and NUVOC contested the 3rd place playoff with Hornets continuing their fantastic run of form, after winning last weekends Scottish District Cup, by securing their top 3 finish in the District League.
Bears and Jets Masters fought every point out in the Final with the match swinging both ways. Some smart plays by Jets Masters coupled with some tired errors by Bears led to the Masters side getting the edge in this match and securing the Men’s District League trophy.
With the single sex leagues back in action for the first time in over 10 years, it was great to see so many teams compete in the 2 rounds. Next season we will be back and you can guarantee it will be bigger.
